Do You Judge Meat Eaters?

By Eccentric Vegan on November 6th, 2010

Q: Can you ever be OK with people who eat meat? Don’t you judge them and look down on them?

A: I can be friends with omnis. The key is to make our friendship focused on nonfood activities. We simply find shared interests in other things (hiking, dogs, shopping, whatever). It’s also helpful to refrain – in general – from discussions about eating animals between defensive omnis and ethical vegans.

That said, meat is simply unjustifiable. I will never “be OK” with the behavior of eating animals. While I can “be OK” with individual people who eat animals (just like I can “be OK” with smokers or people who do other things that I do not condone), eating animals is not OK.

Eating animals is destroying the planet, contributing to major human health threats, and perpetuating extreme cruelty to animals. It’s not OK to eat animals.

  2. Now, I have to comment, because this hypocrisy is hard to digest, even for me, although, believe me, I’ve run into so many idiotic snobs on the Internet it took days to count them. You seriously rant about not judging the consumption of animals, and then you judge them four sentence later? (calling their activity unjustifiable is pretty much judging).

    So, question No. 1.:

If you still think you don’t judge meat eaters, what the hell is that picture on this blog with “fuck spiecism” on it (since, for what I understand, eating meat is part of the ridiculous, made up concept of spiecism)? And how do you explain that whining about Chinese eating habits (you know, dogs and stuff) which can go so far the it’s not just close to become, but often actually becomes racism?

And now, since I mentioned Chinese, question No. 2.:

Why the hell did you vegetarians pick the Chinese to be the culture to fuck with? In China, there are vegetarians since the 7th century, and in Taiwan (still China, but Republic, not People’s Republic) there are around 2 million vegans today, which is more then 10% of the population. Not to mention that some people eat dog there becase that’s the thing they can afford.

Don’t you realize that judging the nutrition of very poor people covers the concept of “being an asshole” on many levels?! It’s a bit easier to be picky about the food in the Western world. When I was a kid in the early years of the post-communist Hungary, we didn’t really hear about vegetarians, because everybody ate what they could. I still remember being sick because of malnourishment. And it was worse in the ’60s, when my unlce was begging my grandma to eat the cat, becaus he was hungry.

Even today, when I see a skinny guy on the street I always think they don’t eat enough, even if they look like athletes. And I hate throwing out food. And get very upset, when someone starts being a pompous snob from a country with GDP over 15.000 USD/capita, and starts a denigrating speech on the poorest people on the Earth. Try to live on the average Chinese salary, and let’s see the what tastes bad…

    Oh, the other thing:

You put in a link of a page which discusses the enviromental issues the meat industry causes. Suprisingly, most of what’s written there is actually the truth, meat industry is not very enviroment friendly. But what vegetarians generously forget, that it’s mostly because of the cows. They gas release is very dangeourus, and they have to be fed with a lot of crops which humans could eat. Their meat is also unhealthy, eating too much of it is the cradle of a hearth attack. And the main problem: beef is the favourite meat product of the USA and the UK. Their beef consumtion is ridiculously high. So, the main problem with meat industry is that they keep too much cows alive.

In comparion, 1 kg chicken meat cause around 86% less enviromental harm (CO2 emission) than the same amount of beef. Even pork is at least 75% better than beef in this point of view. The problem is not the meat eating, it’s eating the worst possible meat. Also, about the health issues, people who eat a lot of fish and chicken, don’t have the same health promblem, as the beef and pork eaters. Don’t go to a vegetarian page to talk about meat, because, frankly, some vegans even lie to scare people into being a vegetarian. That’s why they withhold informations, and they only tell the scary part of meat-eating.

    And some other little thing:
What is this veggie-omni thing? Vegetarians are omnivores too, they just don’t eat meat. Herbivores aren’t herbivores because they choose not to eat meat, but because – in most cases – they can’t. Herbivores have bacteries in their stomach which allows them to digest cellulose as useful nutrient. Humans react to too much cellulose like dogs – with diarrhea, we can’t use it as food. We however have the pepsin enzime, which allows us to digest even raw meat – like the Inuits do in Greenland and North Canada, who live almost exclusively on raw seal and fish, yet they have no history of heart diseases, since raw meat is actually heart-friendly. And yes, Inuits – or Eskimoes, if you want – are omnivores as well, they won’t become carnivores just because they use only one side of the omnivore nutrition. People shouldn’t rewrite biology because of their personal feelings.
